In Practice, Volume I — Tabitha Avanzato

At Basic Space, our teachers are at the heart of everything we do. In Practice is a closer look at the people behind the class.
An honest glimpse into their rhythms, rituals, and perspectives on movement—what inspires them, grounds them and brings them joy both on and off the mat.

Tabitha’s teaching is rooted in depth, intelligence and enlivenment. With detailed cueing and creative sequencing, she encourages a strong mind–body connection and a more considered approach to movement. Her classes have no levels—only exploration. Each pose is deconstructed, understood, and rebuilt with care, offering space for both accessibility and challenge.

Whether or not you reach the final shape, the focus remains the same: the process is the practice.

What does your morning or evening routine look like, and how does it support the way you move through your day?
GO OUTSIDE every morning. Come rain or shine (ok, maybe not so much in the rain). Luckily my job gets me out early and straight onto my bike and that puts me in the best mood. Evenings, if I’m not hanging out with friends, I’m playing music or reading by candlelight lol.

Are there other forms of creativity or self-expression that feed your movement practice?
MUSIC. A big one for me, it sets the rhythm of the class and I tend to instruct the beat a lot of the time. What naturally comes from music...dance! Music and dance are hugely important for me. The main way I move through anxiety is by putting on music, dancing and breathing through it.

Is there a belief about movement, teaching, or wellness that you’re currently questioning or re-evaluating?
It’s not so much a specific belief, but the current culture around ‘wellness’ that I question a lot. I think wellness has been sold as a neat little aesthetic that can be packaged up and bought. I think social media totally exacerbates it. I wonder whether the need to become the best and healthiest version of yourself is a genuine need or something that is algorithmically fed to me. There is now so much information, too much, about how to live optimally and you can do all of the things perfectly. But I believe, if you don’t have happiness, hope and community, none of the biohacking is relevant.

What can students expect to explore or discover when they practice with you?
At first you might not know what’s going on, transitions and styles of poses may feel new, but midway through it’ll start to make sense, like a puzzle. You’ll learn something new, maybe sweat just a lil and feel a whole lot softer than when you arrived.

How would you describe the experience of your class to someone who has never been?
Indescribable. You’ll have to come find out for yourself ;)

What are you currently listening to, reading, or watching that’s shaping your headspace?
People! Constantly learning and growing through others.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you outside of teaching?
I write music and often perform it at gigs. I’m on all the platforms. Check me out tehe.

Coffee, tea, or something else entirely—and why?
Coffee. Always, and no amount of fearmongering around ‘mold’ or ‘cortisol’ could ruin that for me.

What’s your ideal way to spend a slow day off? What’s something you always have with you, no matter where you go?
Being barefoot on the grass with my journal loool.

When can we practice with you?
Tuesdays 730pm Pilates + Fridays 6pm Yoga — both in Camberwell. Book here
